{"id":11700,"date":"2025-10-29T09:52:38","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T08:52:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/?p=11700"},"modified":"2025-10-29T09:52:39","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T08:52:39","slug":"dorian-mode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/en\/dorian-mode\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring the Dorian Mode"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you follow us on Instagram, you\u2019ll already know that at <em>megustaelpiano<\/em> we\u2019ve been celebrating <strong>Dorian Week<\/strong> to mark the publication of two of my pieces written in this mode, included in <a href=\"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/en\/concept-collections-by-nicola-cantan\/\"><em>Concept Collection 12<\/em> by Nicola Cantan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now I\u2019d like to share with you the videos we\u2019ve made. To truly understand any theoretical concept, such as the Dorian mode, it\u2019s essential to approach it in many different ways. That\u2019s why we designed a variety of activities on Instagram to explore this mode: pieces to perform, ideas for improvisation or composition, a theoretical explanation, exploration of pieces in different styles using the Dorian mode, and ear training to distinguish the mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These ideas can be adapted to our students\u2019 levels, they can be made more challenging or simpler depending on how advanced each student is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started <strong>Dorian Week<\/strong> with a piece to perform, <em>A Bird in the Forest<\/em>, published in <em>Concept Collection 12<\/em> by Vibrant Music Teaching. This publication will be available for a few weeks at the following <a href=\"https:\/\/colourfulkeys.ie\/shop\/concept-collection-12-dorian\/\">link.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This piece is written in <strong>E Dorian<\/strong>, which has two sharps: F# and C#. It begins with the melody in the right hand, where it\u2019s important to pay attention to the articulation between <strong>legato<\/strong> and <strong>staccato<\/strong>. In section B, the melody moves to the left hand, which should stand out over a softer right hand accompaniment. Finally, the <strong>coda<\/strong> repeats the opening themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;re sharing a video so you can listen to it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Bird in the Forest by Juan Cabeza\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dl4IKnJZ7cg?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this day\u2019s activity, we introduce different repertoire that uses the Dorian mode, either partially or entirely. Exploring works from different styles gives us, in our lessons, an opportunity to study a variety of scores and to explore different musical periods (although in the video we used modern pieces, you can also use historical examples).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the following video, you can see several examples of pieces that feature this mode. They are all performed in <strong>D Dorian<\/strong>, to make the transition between them smoother. The pieces we chose are: <em>\u201cNausica\u00e4 Opening Theme\u201d<\/em> by Joe Hisaishi, <em>\u201cBillie Jean\u201d<\/em> by Michael Jackson, <em>\u201cEleanor Rigby\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cNorwegian Wood\u201d<\/em> by The Beatles, <em>\u201cScarborough Fair\u201d<\/em> (a traditional song\u2014Simon &amp; Garfunkel have a well-known version of it), and <em>\u201cSo What\u201d<\/em> by Miles Davis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We hope you enjoy this selection!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"6 Pieces that Use the Dorian Mode\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iA0TAoB813Q?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>Day 3<\/strong>, we explained what the <strong>Dorian mode<\/strong> is. This mode uses the same notes as the <strong>natural minor scale (or Aeolian mode)<\/strong> but with the <strong>sixth note raised<\/strong>. In other words, if we take any natural minor scale and raise its sixth note by a semitone, we get a Dorian scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if we take the notes of <strong>A natural minor<\/strong> (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A) and raise the sixth note (changing F natural to F sharp), it becomes an <strong>A Dorian<\/strong> scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This difference in the <strong>sixth note<\/strong> of the scale is what gives the <strong>Dorian mode<\/strong> its distinctive character and makes the <strong>fourth degree<\/strong> of the scale a <strong>major chord<\/strong> (instead of minor, as in the natural minor scale). In the video, you\u2019ll be able to hear this difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the theory is important, but it\u2019s always easier to internalize it when we create music based on the concepts we study. So, we encourage you to <strong>create your own music using this mode<\/strong>, just like in the next video. You can adapt the improvisation to your level or to your students\u2019 level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Dorian Mode Explained in 90 Seconds. El modo d\u00f3rico explicado en 90 segundos\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O-5062lTP-0?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 4<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To explore this mode more deeply, we believe it\u2019s important not only to play or listen to a piece written in the Dorian mode, but also to <strong>transform a well-known song or melody into the Dorian mode<\/strong>. This helps highlight the unique characteristics of the mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose a simple melody such as <em>\u201cSilent Night,\u201d \u201cFr\u00e8re Jacques,\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cLondon Bridge Is Falling Down,\u201d<\/em> and convert it into the Dorian mode. In the following video, we carried out this activity using <em>\u201cTwinkle Twinkle Little Star\u201d<\/em> in <strong>C Dorian<\/strong>, harmonizing the melody with the chords <strong>C m<\/strong>, <strong>F<\/strong>, and <strong>B\u266d (or G m)<\/strong>. On <strong>Day 5<\/strong>, we wanted to propose another creative activity: <strong>create an ostinato<\/strong> (a short, repetitive musical phrase) for the left hand, one or two measures long, using notes from the Dorian scale. Over that accompaniment, <strong>improvise a melody<\/strong> with the Dorian scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After playing it several times, you can <strong>modulate up a semitone<\/strong> and play the ostinato in <strong>E\u266d Dorian<\/strong>, improvising in that scale with your right hand. Whenever you want you can return to <strong>D Dorian<\/strong>. If the ostinato examples we prepared in the video seem too difficult, feel free to <strong>create simpler ones of your own<\/strong> or play one of the following ones in the score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure 728px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the <strong>second-to-last day<\/strong>, we suggest an <strong>aural training activity<\/strong>. Developing the ear is one of the most important skills for any musician. You can adapt the ear training exercises to suit your students\u2019 needs and levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, you\u2019ll hear a short musical excerpt played twice, once in the <strong>Dorian mode<\/strong> and once in the <strong>natural minor (Aeolian) mode<\/strong>, and you\u2019ll have to guess which one comes first.
