{"id":11402,"date":"2025-07-28T14:06:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T12:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/?p=11402"},"modified":"2025-07-28T14:06:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T12:06:24","slug":"nckp-day-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/en\/nckp-day-4\/","title":{"rendered":"NCKP Day 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The final day of the conference was the shortest\u2014running from 8:00 to 2:00\u2014but it was almost as intense as the previous ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first session of the day was organized by <strong>Alfred Music<\/strong>, who presented some of their latest publications. One of these was the new collection <em>Rare Recital Treasures<\/em> by<strong> Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield and Kevin Chance<\/strong>\u2014three volumes of lesser-known pieces from the traditional repertoire, as well as works by contemporary composers, aimed at intermediate to early advanced students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pieces in the collection span a wide range of styles and periods, from Jean-Philippe Rameau, Dusek, Benda, and Amy Beach to contemporary composers such as Jennifer Linn and Dennis Alexander. It\u2019s a carefully curated and highly useful collection for exploring lesser-known repertoire, with pieces that are perfect for recital or exam use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d also like to highlight the edition featuring three works by Florence Price: <em>The Sea Swallow<\/em>, <em>The Old Boatman<\/em>, and <em>The Goblin and the Mosquito<\/em>, as well as the <em>Solo Celebration<\/em> series\u2014six volumes at various levels, featuring music by today\u2019s composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-1-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-1-3.jpeg 1600w, https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-1-3-1280x720.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-1-3-980x551.jpeg 980w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 1600px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Rare Recital Treasures&#8221;  Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield and Kevin Chance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The next session was titled <em>\u201cHow to Approach a New Piece: An \u2018Unmasterclass\u2019 for Elementary and Intermediate Repertoire.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><br>Usually, a masterclass is designed to refine a piece that the student has already learned and practiced. But this was an <em>\u201cunmasterclass\u201d<\/em>\u2014focused on how to prepare pieces <strong>before<\/strong> the learning process begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a fascinating and engaging session where <strong>Samantha Coates and Leila Viss<\/strong> took turns playing the roles of teacher and student in a fun and dynamic way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using four example pieces\u2014<em>&#8220;Rainbow Colors&#8221;<\/em> by J. Knerr, <em>&#8220;End Game&#8221;<\/em> by J. Eklund, <em>&#8220;Arabesque&#8221;<\/em> by F. Burgm\u00fcller, and <em>&#8220;Musette&#8221;<\/em> from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook\u2014they shared countless creative and enjoyable ideas for helping students prepare new repertoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This preparation phase is crucial: it deeply influences how students approach, absorb, and internalize a piece. Joint Hypermobility and Its Effect on the Developing Pianist,\u201d<\/em> <strong>Celeste Watson and Bethany Cothern<\/strong> discussed <strong>joint hypermobility<\/strong>, also known as hyperlaxity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In piano playing, this condition primarily affects the finger joints and can make it difficult to maintain proper hand posture, significantly increasing the risk of injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their presentation, Celeste and Bethany shared practical tips for recognizing and identifying hypermobility, as well as valuable strategies for supporting students who experience this condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-3-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-3-3.jpeg 1600w, https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-3-3-1280x720.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/megustaelpiano.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/foto-3-3-980x551.jpeg 980w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 1600px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bethany Cothern and Celeste Watson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I attended two more presentations, I don&#8217;t want this post to get too long\u2014so instead, I\u2019d like to tell you a bit about the <strong>Exhibition Hall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a huge space with around 40 booths of all kinds. There were stands from various publishers, including<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alfred.com\/uk\/\"> <strong>Alfred Music<\/strong><\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.halleonard.com\/\"> <strong>Hal Leonard<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pianosafari.com\/\">PIANO SAFARI<\/a><\/strong> (where my own books were also on display!), <a href=\"https:\/\/pianoadventures.com\/\"><strong>Piano Adventures<\/strong>,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/musicmovesforpiano.com\/\"> <strong>Music Moves for Piano<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/colorinmypiano.com\/\">Color In My Piano<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkpiano.com\/about\">Grant Kondo<\/a>\u2019s booth<\/strong>, among brands like <strong>Yamaha<\/strong>, <strong>Kawai<\/strong>, <strong>Steinway<\/strong>, and <strong>Athenae Pianos<\/strong>, where I discovered <strong>narrow-key pianos<\/strong>\u2014designed for children or adults with smaller hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To give you an idea: on a regular piano, I can just about reach a 10th (with effort!), but on these pianos, I could easily stretch to a 12th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt like Rachmaninoff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"900\" learn about their different programs and browse through their publications\u2014<strong>including books by my dear and much-missed Forrest Kinney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Piano Marvel<\/strong> was also there, showcasing their software, which I found really interesting. exhibition hall, the keynotes, the presentations, the concerts, and the discussions\u2014all were of an exceptionally high standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But above all, the highlight was the people I met.<br>A wonderful community where everyone is eager to share what they know, learn from one another, and grow as teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thank you to all the amazing people I\u2019ve met
